Our family cooked on the BBQ and did some healthy eating, mostly! This amazing book cover on an icing sheet was ordered online, when the book first came out. I sent some of that cake to a friend through the post. Unfortunately, there was no pattern remaining when it arrived so she was a little bamboozled! Haha! You can but try to spread the love.20170203_212949

Review of a similar story-The Bigger Fish

This short story mirrors my own, What If I Go? It is suitable for a younger audience if you find my novel too challenging this will more subtly warn young adults onward of the dangers of taking hard drugs.

It also raises awareness of the sensitive topic of sexual exploitation within a short story.

The book is called ‘The Bigger Fish’ by Magdel Roets see

Unfortunately the sexual exploitation of girls like Grace in What If I Go? are based on true stories recently televised on the BBC in the UK. See this weeks Three Girls drama series and the newspaper report following the showing here:

Reading to empower writing!

For new writing to flourish, I’m currently reading credible fiction to emulate. That’s not classed as copying but I’m acknowledging strengths in other’s manuscripts. Completing reviews of these works will encourage those authors and help me become more aware of powerful writing techniques. Writers can help one another improve our craft through such collaboration. Do you wish to join me?

Have you any suggestions of good empowering books to improve my style?

Thanks for reading. Download my reasonably priced new adult suspense novel for an idea of where I’m coming from. See myBook.to/pollyjwhite

I appreciate your support as a newbie writer.

Old fashioned fruit cake treat!

20170506_141537

This Christening cake has been under construction since November. I’m happy to have finished it for a real deadline. There have been layers involved similar to those techniques required in creative writing. Polishing involved several editing tasks; things seen and unseen. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating…

The baby it was made for is only six months older than the cake that was definitely designed with parents in mind. This fruit is laced with rum so will deliver a kick! I’m making healthier puffed rice nibbles for the little ones, fear not.

The daisies are edible and sweet indicative of the young life they represent. Yay!

My debut novel for New Adults is less palatable, maybe? My next writing recipe includes short stories. To make them palatable or tasty? That is the question.

Reality may well prioritise. I don’t want to induce sickness but good health.

No chocolate for me!

I’ve given up nibbling chocolate for Lent. It’s so difficult…Losing weight could be a bonus?

If I use the time to write rather than snacking, I could be more productive. The shops are full of beautifully decorated Easter eggs to tempt me. Don’t worry, I’ve still made choc chip cookies for my family. I suppose that’s what a personal sacrifice is all about. Actually, craving a sweet thing is a small price to pay.

Enjoy your confectionery!

More Truth About Writing

An extract from the Mystery Thriller Week-

Let me tell you, being a writer can be terrifying. All I know is that I couldn’t write stuff that didn’t matter. So without giving too much away, my debut novel is about grooming and sexual exploitation. It is written using alternating chapters from the POV of protagonist and those who control her. As the story progresses, we hear more from those who genuinely care for her, though. The alternating voices allowed for some troughs as opposed to the heightening, teenage tension. Using contrasting perspective was interesting.
I was made aware of this in a book a read called ‘Amity & Sorrow.’ This is where Peggy Riley used alternating voices from the three main characters along with contrasting timelines! She explained, there were 2 POVs in 3rd. That involved 3 timelines – 2 forward, 1 backward. Her intelligent fiction was based on the Waco Siege. I found this compelling novel from Little Brown & Co. works well. The historical fiction is about escaping cult life and was an inspiration. I highly recommend it.
False expectation leads to rude awakening for my character, Grace. She seeks the whole ‘good life’ package, instead she’s tagged with an AKA that is undeserved. The intolerable injustice of her story is traumatic; on a journey through coming-of-age she deters others following along that slippery path. I give fair warning to readers that there is a rape scene.
We owe it to the reader to be authentic and hopeful in fiction. Getting the balance is the thing! Right?
Basically, Grace learns the hard way from her experience. That is what a protagonist’s job is, I believe. Then, I found her character profile develop adding layers as she matured. I guess a distinguishable character profile is really useful for crime writing in general…
No spoilers here. The bringing of the 74,000 words together was tricky. Outlining might have helped! The answer, this time was to chunk it into 50,000 word slots and line those up with chapter details. Was there an easier way, I wonder to order a runaway manuscript?
Lastly, I was wondering whether ‘happy ever after’ endings work, now days?
Did they ever?
